The one difference between the linux boot and the vista pe is that there was a file on the linux boot on the actual usb boot folder that you clicked and it made the USB drive bootable. Ill try the swiss thing and get back to you. I also have an 8GB but I have a linux boot on it and it works fine. Perhaps Vista is the only OS in which diskpart works on a flash drive being bootable. My only thought on why it wouldnt be working is what you said about XP not seeing it as a removable drive.
